CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art Hits UP Library

The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman community officially welcomed the most comprehensive and authoritative source book on Philippine art and culture into the libraries of their colleges and schools.

In the presence of UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan, Vice Chancellor for Research and Development Fidel Nemenzo, and the University of the Philippines Press, over 300 sets of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Encyclopedia of Philippine Art (CCP EPA) were officially turned over for the use of the university’s students and faculty in all units across the nation.

“UP scholars served as editors, writers, researchers, creative and technical directors as well as support staff,” CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Chris Millado said in Filipino. “This project would also not be possible without its editorial, research and project management staff, majority of which were produced by this prestigious institution.”

The University of the Philippines has made numerous contributions to Filipino history and humanities. Many essays and articles about the university are written into the CCP EPA.  The university has produced 21 National Artists and educated four presidents of the Republic of the Philippines.

“Their dedication towards making this grand project in the last years, as well as their undying cooperation with the cultural center only proves that UP is still and will always be the home of outstanding scholars in service of the nation,” he said in Filipino.  Millado was represented by Libertine Dela Cruz, Project Manager of the CCP EPA.

With 12 volumes, over 5000 entries, and over 3500 images, the CCP EPA contains quintessential information on everything Filipino from north to south, urban to rural, and indigenous to contemporary.

“We strongly encourage you to embody and take part in our goal of disseminating knowledge on Philippine arts and culture, stimulating new ideas, and creating new works that will enrich our country’s heritage,” Millado said.

The CCP EPA is now on a course to go digital as production for its online edition is currently underway, and is set to be launched next year.

The Taal Volcano That We Know Isn’t The REAL Taal Volcano.

The Taal Volcano is a famous landmark in the Philippines. It has been part of the Filipino culture and eduation for the longest time. The Volcano was also featured in parts of American pop star Katy Perry's music video for 'Roar.'

Not to ruin everything, but what if I tell you  that the picture perfect landscape you believe to be Bulkang Taal is not the real bulkang Taal?

Yes! you read it right!

Apparently The Taal Volcano That We Know Isn’t The REAL Taal Volcano. A reddit post revealed that the REAL Taal Volcano that we see in our history textbooks referred as the "Volcano" is a pyroclastic cone formed when Taal Volcano erupted in 1770 and it is called Binitiang malaki.

Binitiang Malaki is the most photographed  part of Taal Volcano Island but it is just a small part of the volcano.

The REAL Taal volcano is over & behind Binintiang Malaki.

Well, if this is new to you, you are not alone. Even the postcards available on our bookstores tags Binintiang Malaki as Taal Volcano.

Teddy Locsin Jr. Received Tons of ‘ok boomer’ Replies on Twitter

Early this week, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr verbally abused a reporter. But if you think he is going to apologize, you’re very much mistaken.

Locsin cursed Jhesset Enano a Philippine Daily Inquirer reporter for live-tweeting President Rodrigo Duterte’s absence during the 35th ASEAN Summit.

But the story doesn't end there. The Politician gets a taste of his own medicine after Millennials and Gen Z Twitter users flooded the diplomatic’s twitter acount with 'ok, boomer' after defending President Duterte’s decision to appoint Vice President Leni Robredo as PH’s ‘drug czar‘ on twitter.

But Locsin is not backing down. He found some time to reply on some of the ‘ok, boomers‘ :

"OK, Boomer" Is the Ultimate Generation Z Clap-back

Chances are you've seen the phrase all over social media and might be a fan of it. "OK boomer" is a phrase Gen Zer's are using to clap back at older people or people who just don't like change, whether it's about culture or especially on things about politics.

What does "OK boomer" mean?

According to Dictionary.com, "OK boomer" is a viral internet slang phrase used, often humorously or ironically, to call out or dismiss out-of-touch or close-minded opinions associated with the baby boomer generation and older people more generally.

According to  Know Your Meme, we can trace back the origin of the phrase as early as April 2018 as a hashtag in response to tweets criticizing both Gen Z and Millennials.

In earlier news, New Zealand politician ChlΓΆe Swarbrick even dropped the phrase in response to being heckled during her speech that made the phrase spiked again in popularity through memes.

What do people think of the term?

Some older people might find it offensive, but let's be honest term is pretty funny. However, LET'S BE CLEAR: the "ok, boomer" clap back is only used for people who are being rude, ignorant, condescending and insulting to the younger generation. It is not aimed to be used otherwise to hurt people's sentiments.

Netizens Slams The Upcoming Animated Movie about Magellan

The story of Ferdinand Magellan and Lapu-Lapu has been part of our history and we Filipinos know how we were conquered by Spain for 333 years. The colonization introduced us to Christianity and many other things that are now part of our culture.

The story is undeniably great for a movie. But when a trailer for an animated movie based on Magellan’s voyage around the world surfaced, Filipino netizens are not happy.

 Watch the trailer below:

ELCANO and MAGELLAN:The First Voyage around the World is an animated film directed by Ángel Alonso that employs a great sense of adventure but might screw real moments in history.

Basing on the trailer the movie might depict the country’s colonizers as good and seems like they are showing Lapu-Lapu as the villain in the Battle of Mactan.

A lot of netizens have shared their sentiments about ‘Elcano & Magellan’.

The movie’s release is planned for 2019, to coincide with the 500th anniversary of the start of Elcano and Magellan’s circumnavigation.
