CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art Hits UP Library

The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman community officially welcomed the most comprehensive and authoritative source book on Philippine art and culture into the libraries of their colleges and schools.

In the presence of UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan, Vice Chancellor for Research and Development Fidel Nemenzo, and the University of the Philippines Press, over 300 sets of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Encyclopedia of Philippine Art (CCP EPA) were officially turned over for the use of the university’s students and faculty in all units across the nation.

“UP scholars served as editors, writers, researchers, creative and technical directors as well as support staff,” CCP Vice President and Artistic Director Chris Millado said in Filipino. “This project would also not be possible without its editorial, research and project management staff, majority of which were produced by this prestigious institution.”

The University of the Philippines has made numerous contributions to Filipino history and humanities. Many essays and articles about the university are written into the CCP EPA.  The university has produced 21 National Artists and educated four presidents of the Republic of the Philippines.

“Their dedication towards making this grand project in the last years, as well as their undying cooperation with the cultural center only proves that UP is still and will always be the home of outstanding scholars in service of the nation,” he said in Filipino.  Millado was represented by Libertine Dela Cruz, Project Manager of the CCP EPA.

With 12 volumes, over 5000 entries, and over 3500 images, the CCP EPA contains quintessential information on everything Filipino from north to south, urban to rural, and indigenous to contemporary.

“We strongly encourage you to embody and take part in our goal of disseminating knowledge on Philippine arts and culture, stimulating new ideas, and creating new works that will enrich our country’s heritage,” Millado said.

The CCP EPA is now on a course to go digital as production for its online edition is currently underway, and is set to be launched next year.

CCP's 'Viewed Through a 360 Lens' Opens December

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) closes off the decade with a new media exhibition by Gericho Iniel Cruz.  The exhibit #AngAlamatNgMalikhaingKonsyumer or Ang Alamat ng Malikhaing Konsyumer opens on December 5, 2019 at the CCP’s Pasilyo Vicente Manansala (2F Hallway Gallery) at 6pm.  This three-part show presents 360 degree videos of different aspects of, or “spectacles” at the CCP.  Viewers will experience the physical exhibitions through a virtual tour using a Google cardboard virtual reality device placed on three church pews at the exhibition area.  This is the first time that Cruz exhibits his work at the CCP, and he conceptualized it to support the ongoing 50th anniversary celebration of the Center.

Cruz’s interest in new media art started with him creating glitch paintings in 2011.  From there, he started to theorize the notion of glitch through art and its parallels in society.  He included videos, circuits, microcontrollers, IPad’s and other forms of new media in the various group exhibitions that he joined thereafter, such as those in Kaida Gallery, Altro Mondo, and Vinyl on Vinyl.

The exhibit #AngAlamatNgMalikhaingKonsyumer will run until January 19, 2020.  Exhibit viewing hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm.  Hours are extended until 10pm on days with evening performances at the CCP Main Theater.  For more information, contact the Visual Arts and Museum Division, Production and Exhibition Department at (632) 8832-1125 loc. 1504/1505 and (632) 8832-3702, mobile (0917-6033809), email (ccp.exhibits@gmail.com) or visit www.culturalcenter.gov.ph.
