Using “they” as singular is now fully acceptable in scholarly writing and everything!
Earlier this year, Merriam-Webster announced that “they” has been added to the dictionary as a singular pronoun. Now, APA endorses the use of “they” as a singular third-person pronoun in the seventh edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
The official recognition is a win for gender non-conforming and non-binary folks because it is affirmation and support for the community.
I have a degree in English. This is my area. The use of "they" as a singular pronoun is entirely valid and goes back centuries. Some of the greatest writers in the English language did it.— david (nightman master ass) (@DavisStockwell) November 1, 2019

If you’re complaining that they/them pronouns mean multiple people or something like that, I learned in like, 1st grade that they/them is a singular term too. For example: “They went to the store”, simple as that. So get your facts straight boomers
The use of the nonbinary “they” and the practice of asking for pronouns shouldn’t be this stereotype thing that only “cool” organizations do. It is basic human decency.
