The Cultural Center of the Philippines’s Tanghalang Pilipino (TP) is about to the famous Ilocano epic, “Lam-ang” starting this December.
The Biag ni Lam-ang, from the people of the northern Philippines, is said to be the only complete epic from a Christianized Philippine indigenous group. Exhibiting a mixture of Spanish and indigenous cultures, the earliest written record of the epic was in 1889.
The legend depicts unwavering bravery, justice, love, romance, relationship, journey and even friendship. The vastness and heroism in the story are filled with idealistic imagination and fantasy. The moral lesson on the story of Biag Ni Lam Ang is that you must persevere through the trials of life.
This stage adaptation is written by Jen Darlene Torres (libretto and music), with dramaturgy by prolific playwright Eljay Castro Deldoc.
The show will be directed by Fitz Bitana and Marco Viaña, with set-design also by Viaña. “Lam-ang” will run from December 6 to 15 at the CCP Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater).
